Wander Wednesday

tile work covering the walls and ceiling of the Saadian Tombs in Marrackech

This photo was taken at the Saadian Tombs in Marrakech, popular for its amazing displays of Moroccan ceramic tilework, called zellige, along with viewing the rich history of the 15th-century Saadian Dynasty. Clay tiles are glazed with different colors and hand-cut in various shapes to create different designs. This style of mosaic dates back to about the 10th century and is seen across the Islamic world. Fes is considered the center of zellige, due to clay deposits there. We saw the workers chiseling diamonds, squares, and flower shapes at a tile workshop and even tried it ourselves! If you like mosaics, Morocco is the place where you will be continually wowed!
