Wander Wednesday

“Not all those who wander are lost.”- J.R.R. Tolkien

Welcome to autumn!
While the coronavirus is still out there, we are traveling a lot! Please remember to stay safe and get the boosters as needed. This month we highlight the Marquesas Archipelago, one of the five island groups that make up French Polynesia. We visited several of the fascinating volcanic islands on the SS Paul Gauguin.

Paul Gauguin Gravesite in French Polynesia

The painter Paul Gauguin’s gravesite is in a hilltop cemetery on Hiva Oa, the second largest island in the Marquesa Archipelago of French Polynesia. The grave of the Belgian singer Jacques Brel is also here. In the main town of Atuona, we visited the Jacques Brel Museum and the Paul Gauguin Cultural Center, which details both lives with artifacts. After briefly visiting these remote islands, I see why they attracted (and continue to) so many writers and artists-the climate, the natural beauty, the historic culture and people make for an inviting possibility to lead a different kind of life.
