Tall columns carved with faces and symbols

This year there were some large-scale outdoor exhibits as well as the inside ones. Outside of the Arsenale, these tall columns look Egyptian at first glance. Upon closer inspection, they have contemporary symbols and phrases, along with carvings that turn out to be likenesses of local people in South Central Los Angeles known to the artist, Lauren Halsey. This installation was entitled, “keepers of the krown 2024.” If the weather hadn’t been chucking down rain, I would have stopped for a closer look at each of the columns and their designs, which combined theancient traditions with modern sensibility in interesting ways. Contrasted with the Venetian architecture, it was fascinating to see.
