August 7 is National Lighthouse Day. The Point Bolivar Lighthouse in this photo is near Crystal Beach, Texas. It was built in the 1850’s by the Republic of Texas and dismantled during the Civil War. It was rebuilt under federal auspices in 1872. During the hurricanes of 1900 and 1915, people sheltered within the tower. The lighthouse was officially retired in 1933 and is privately owned today.
